Dear listener, or in this case, reader,
It is truly an honor that you are taking the time to listen to my first live album, recorded in Horns Erben, Leipzig, and are curious enough to open up this letter inside. I feel as though so much has happened in my life the last few years, and well, since I believe my music is essentially an autobiography of sorts, I feel somewhat obliged to speak to you, whether you attended the show at Horns Erben or not.
A week ago, I got back from a visit back home, saw my mom, my brother and my grandparents. My Grandparents recently moved to an elderly people’s home, as my grandfather is 94 and needs some help. My brother Nathan took it upon himself to clean out their entire apartment (that is a whole story of itself), and I asked him to do me a favor and save my Grandfathers typewriter. My Grandpa Moses is a Jewish historian, having published numerous books about Jewish migration to America in the early 1900’s. I see a lot of myself in my Grandpa. He was always very quiet and thoughtful, but when he spoke it was always very clear and concise, with a purpose. He liked to stay at home, read (he had a book collection so large I would call it ‘the library’), and of course, write.
Though I am no historian, I do consider myself a writer. It was my goal to type this letter on my Grandfather’s typerwriter, with every hit of the key a pulse of history being felt through my fingers. My Grandfather spent his life’s work trying to make sense of this world. As a son of Jewish refugees in America who fled the Pograms in eastern Europe, he had a lot to make sense of. And in that sense, I feel very much like my Grandfather. I spend my days searching, trying to make sense of this world, but in a different context; a context of feelings, sounds, words, colors, movements, connection…
I came to Leipzig 3 years ago with a mission to play music, and on March 16th, 2019, I had the privilege of performing to a sold out audience at Horns Erben, something I truly wasn’t expecting. In these songs, you can hear my history — past, present, and future. Though I myself am an individual, I can’t help but make sense of the world by looking at where I came from, and the things my family pursued in the past. We are all here on the same mission of exploring, feeling, learning — I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to do this as a living. I’m grateful that I enjoy doing this as a living.
I wanted to thank a number of people for making this show possible, Jens from Horns Erben for mixing and recording this concert, Malo, my sidekick and bass player, Ella for taking photos, Phil for mixing the audio, Franzi and Jörg for joining in on our encore, and my mother, for without her, her guitar that was missing one string that i would bang on when I was little, or her endless ability to give love and music, I would have never begun to find myself through music.
